How are Average Trip Duration, Trip Length, Trip Speed, and Trip Circuity Calculated?

Average Trip Duration is available in most project types, and measures the amount of time (in seconds) elapsed between the start and end of a trip. Trip Length, Trip Speed, and Trip Circuity are available in Trip Attributes only, and must be added when creating your project (see below).

Note:

  • In the Trip Attributes .CSV file, you will see an "Avg" and an "Avg All" value for each attribute. "Avg All" calculates the attribute using all the trips in your data period. "Avg" calculates the attribute using low network factor (less than 4) trips only. Network factor is defined as the unlocked trip length (the "connect-the-dots" trip, before being snapped to the OSM road network) divided by the direct O-D distance (as the crow flies). The "Avg" value basically removes any highly-circuitous trips from the calculations.
  • The Trip Attributes for O-D and O-M-D trips represent attributes for all trips between the Origin and Destination. These are located in the .CSV file ending in "od_trip_attributes_all"
  • The Trip Attributes for single zones represent the entirety of all trips that interact with that zone. These are located in the .CSV file ending in "zone_trip_attributes_all"

O-D/O-M-D Trip Attributes:

  • Trip Duration: The average trip time (in seconds) for trips starting at the Origin Zones and ending at the Destination Zones.
  • Trip Length: The average trip length (in miles) for trips starting at the Origin Zones and ending at the Destination Zones.
  • Trip Speed: The average trip speed (in mph) for trips starting at the Origin Zones and ending at the Destination Zones.
  • Trip Circuity: The average ratio of the length of the trip (snapped to the road network) to the direct distance (as the crow flies).

Zone Trip Attributes:

  • Trip Duration: The average trip time (in seconds) for trips starting in, passing through, or ending in the Zone based on the Zone Type.
  • Trip Length: The average trip length (in miles) for trips starting in, passing through, or ending in the Zone based on the Zone Type.
  • Trip Speed: The average trip speed (in mph) for trips starting in, passing through, or ending in the Zone based on the Zone Type.
  • Trip Circuity: The average ratio of the length of the trip (snapped to the road network) to the direct distance (as the crow flies).
