Choosing Travel Types, Modes, and Data Sources for Each Project Type

There are many different options for StreetLight Data Metrics. You can analyze visitors at a location, traffic on a road, or people traveling from one location to another, and much more! All of these analyses are accomplished by creating Projects. Choosing a Project Type will lead to choosing the Type of Travel (generally Personal or Commercial), Mode of Travel (vehicular, bicycle, or pedestrian), and the Data Source Type (LBS, GPS, or both). Some Project Types will automatically select these options for you, but other Project Types require you to choose the Project configuration that best fits your analysis. This How-to guide will show you how to choose the type of travel, mode of travel, and data source that makes the most sense for your Project.

Step 1: Choose Your Project Type

By the time you get to the Create Projects tab, you should already have defined the question that you’re trying to answer, created your Zones, and chosen your Project Type. If you need help getting here, see our various guides under “Solving Common Mobility Problems” or contact us.  This guide will walk through the options available for each Project Type.

Note: Some choices of Project Type will have values chosen for you which you will not be able to change. Some Project Types will give you options for the Type of Travel and such. You can change these defaults as described below. Again, there are options that will have subsequent values chosen for you which you will not be able to change.

Step 2: Choose the appropriate Mode of travel, type of travel and data source.

The flowchart below walks through the travel type, mode, and data source selection process.

The table below shows what portion of that flowchart applies to the project types

1.1 - Estimated AADT Values

Due to the nature of algorithm for the AADT Projects and that the algorithm uses both the GPS and LBS data sources, the choices for Type of Travel, Mode of Travel, and Data Source Type are set. Learn more about creating Estimated 2017 or 2018 AADT Projects.

  • Type of Travel: Both Personal and Commercial
  • Mode of Travel: Vehicles
  • Data Source Type: Blended GPS and LBS Data

Note: AADT Projects can only be run on Zones that are marked as Pass-through and bi-directional.

1.2 - O-D Analysis

The O-D Analysis is one of the most versatile Project Types. This powerful Project Type can be run with any combination of types of Zones. However, the choice of Mode of Travel and Data Source Type will restrict the Zones. Learn more about creating O-D Analysis Projects.

Choose Type of Travel:

  1. Personal → Choose Mode of Travel
    1. All Modes → Choose Data Source Type
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
      2. Navigation-GPS
      3. Location-Based Services**
    2. Bicycles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
    3. Pedestrians → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
  2. Commercial → Mode of Travel chosen
    1. Mode of Travel: Vehicles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Navigation-GPS

1.3 - O-D Analysis with Middle Filter

The O-D Analysis with Middle Filter Project Type requires pass-through Zones for the Middle Filter Zones and thus has more restrictive options than the O-D analysis.

Choose Type of Travel:

  1. Personal → Choose Mode of Travel
    1. All Modes → Choose Data Source Type
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
      2. Navigation-GPS
    2. Bicycles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Data Source Type: Location-Based Services with Pass-through
  2. Commercial → Mode of Travel chosen
    1. Mode of Travel: Vehicles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Data Source Type: Navigation-GPS

1.4 - O-D to Pre-set Geography

The O-D to Pre-set Geography Project Type is significantly optimized to run quickly considering the volume of Metrics returned. This optimization is currently only available for vehicular based travel. Look for more modes in the future. Learn more about creating O-D to Pre-set Geography Projects.

Choose Type of Travel:

  1. Personal → Choose Mode of Travel
    1. All Modes → Choose Data Source Type
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
      2. Navigation-GPS
      3. Location-Based Services**
    2. Bicycles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
    3. Pedestrians → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
  2. Commercial → Mode of Travel chosen
    1. Vehicles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Navigation-GPS

1.5 - Visitor Home and Work Analysis

The Visitor Home and Work Analysis returns Metrics about the people who visit locations. Thus, the options for this Project Type are already set. Learn more about creating Visitor Home and Work Analysis Projects.

  • Type of Travel: Personal
  • Mode of Travel: All Modes
  • Data Source Type: Location-Based Services

1.6 - Zone Activity Analysis

The Zone Activity Analysis is another of the most versatile of the Project Types. This powerful Project Type can be run with any combination of Zones: line or polygon; pass-through or not; with or without direction; bi-directional or not. However, the choice of Mode of Travel will restrict the Zones. Learn more about creating Zone Activity Projects.

Choose Type of Travel:

  1. Personal → Choose Mode of Travel
    1. All Modes → Choose Data Source Type
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
      2. Navigation-GPS
      3. Location-Based Services**
    2. Bicycles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
    3. Pedestrians → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
  2. Commercial → Mode of Travel chosen
    1. Mode of Travel: Vehicles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Navigation-GPS

1.7 - Segment Analysis

The Segment Analysis Project Type is only currently available for vehicular Metrics. Thus the options are more limited.

Choose Type of Travel:

  1. Personal → Choose Mode of Travel
    1. All Modes → Choose Data Source Type
      1. Location-Based Services with Pass-through
      2. Navigation-GPS
  2. Commercial → Mode of Travel chosen
    1. Vehicles → Data Source Type chosen
      1. Navigation-GPS

1.8 - Traffic Diagnostics

Traffic Diagnostics Projects combine multiple Project Types, including AADT, and thus the options for this Project Type are already set. Learn more about creating Traffic Diagnostics Projects.

  • Type of Travel: Both Personal and Commercial
  • Mode of Travel: Vehicles
  • Data Source Type: Blended GPS and LBS Data
