How does your trip sample differ from your device sample?

In general, though not always, for our GPS Commercial data, the trip sample size will be higher than device (truck) sample size. That’s because trucks that are in active use, taking many trips per week, are more likely to be in our data set because they’re more likely to have up-to-date fleet management tools. Trucks that are more rarely used are less likely.

In general, though not always, for our LBS-Personal data, the trip sample size will be lower than the device (person) sample size. This is because we don’t capture all trips for every device in our system. And, some of the data we do capture, is messy or otherwise problematic, so we scrub it out. This finding of “useful” devices and trips for a particular type of analysis is part of the data science value we add to the raw data.
