July 11th, 2017

Dear StreetLight InSight® User:

There will be a scheduled StreetLight InSight update on Tuesday, July 11th from approximately 6pm to 12am PT. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, this StreetLight InSight release includes several important updates:

New Travel Metric – Visitor Activity Index

  • The new Visitor Activity Index Metric provides the relative volume of visitors to specific Zones. The Metrics are included in the Visitor Home/Work Analysis Project.
  • These Metrics are included in Project downloads in a new CSV file named “visitor_activity.csv.” They can also be visualized as charts in StreetLight InSight.
  • Visitor Activity Index Metrics are not available in Visitor Home/Work Analysis Projects run prior to this update. If you attempt to visualize this Metric in a Project run prior to this release, the error message “No data available for this combination of inputs” will be displayed. Downloaded CSVs will read “N/A” in the appropriate columns.
  • To add Visitor Activity Index Metrics to old Visitor Home/Work Analyses, please create a new copy of the Project in StreetLight InSight or contact Support at support@streetlightdata.com.

New Travel Metric – Home-Work Trip Purpose

  • This new Metric is available for “Origin-Destination Analysis” and “Zone Activity Analysis” Projects that use Location-Based Services data. It is not available for Projects that use navigation-GPS data.
  • The Home-Work Trip Purpose Metric provides the percentage of trips for each O-D pair or Zone that are between home, work, or other locations. Trip Purposes are provided as follows:
  • Home-Based Work (HBW): Travel between home and work in either direction.
  • Home-Based Other (HBO): Travel to or from home, to anywhere other than work.
  • Non-Home Based (NHB): All travel not to or from home (i.e. all travel other than the above)
  • To calculate this Metric, all trips in the analysis are evaluated to determine whether their origin Zones are also the devices’ expected home or work locations. (In contrast, our Simple Trip Purpose Metrics use the parcel data associated with trips’ origin Zones to assign a trip purpose of “residential, commercial, or other.”)
  • To access this Metric, please contact your StreetLight Data representative.

StreetLight Volume: 2016 AADT Metrics Updated and Visualization Added

  • The next version of our StreetLight Volume: 2016 AADT Metrics are now available. The algorithm has been refined to use more data.
  • Additionally, StreetLight Volume: 2016 AADT Metrics can now be visualized in StreetLight InSight.
  • To access this Metric, please contact your StreetLight Data representative.

New Format for Downloads of O-D by Pre-set Geography Projects

  • The format of CSV files for O-D by Pre-set Geography Projects now more closely match CSV files for our standard O-D Analysis Projects.
  • Two columns have been added to the CSV file: “Origin Zone Source” and “Destination Zone Source.” These columns will read “Input” for the Zones that users upload. The pre-set geographies will read either “TAZ,” “Census Block Group,” or “ZIP,” depending on the type of region selected by the user.
  • No changes to the Metrics have been made. Only the download format has changed. This update applies to existing Projects run previously in StreetLight InSight and to new Projects.

Subscription Limitations Now Enforced Automatically

  • Subscription limitations are now enforced automatically in StreetLight InSight. Users can see the limitations of their subscription on the “Account Management” page of StreetLight InSight.
  • These limitations include:
  • The number of users that can use an account. Users can see how many users are available under the “Company” tab of the “Account Management” page.
  • The number of Projects or Sites that can be run in an account. Users can see how many are available under the “Activity” tab of the “Account Management” page. The total quota is listed under the “Company” tab. Only Projects and Sites that are successfully sent for Metrics and became “Available” count towards quotas. Note: Deleted Projects and Sites that received Metrics are still applied towards account’s quotas. When the quota for an account is reached, Metrics will not be processed for new Sites or Projects. Users will see an error message if they attempt to run additional Metrics.
  • Geographic restrictions. Users can now see if there is a geographic boundary associated with their subscription under the “Company” tab of the “Account Management” page. There are no other changes to the user experience for this restriction.
  • The number of Zones that can be used in a Project. Users can now see the maximum number of Zones that can be used in a single Project under the “Company” tab of the “Account Management” page. Users will not be able to create Projects that exceed their account’s Zone limits.
  • To add more Projects, Zones, Sites, or Users to your account, or if you believe a restriction was added to your account in error, please contact your StreetLight Data representative.

Faster, Improved Map Visualizations

  • Map visualizations are now faster and cleaner thanks to an update of our processing tools. In the future, we will roll these visualizations out to Project “view” windows, Zone set windows, and other places throughout StreetLight InSight.
  • You may notice some slight changes in the visualization of maps as a result of this update.

New Project Types Available for Data API

  • Our data API now supports the following Projects:
  • (NEW) O-D Analysis Projects that use Location-Based Services data
  • O-D Analysis Projects that use navigation-GPS data
  • Visitor Home/Work Analysis Projects
  • A new parameter, “data_source_type” has been added to the call to create Projects. This required parameter will invalidate all existing create Projects calls.

Updated Work Grids for Home/Work Metrics

  • Due to a back-end processing error, our Metrics did not represent the "Work Locations" of visitors comprehensively in the past. This affected the "Work Footprint Map" and "Work Distance" Metrics.
  • As a result of this release, these Metrics will now deliver a more complete set of Work Locations for visitors to Zones and Sites. There are slight changes to other Metrics due to reprocessing and updated normalization factors.
  • If you wish for us to re-run your Sites and Projects with the latest data, please email support@streetlightdata.com.

New Navigation-GPS and Location-Based Services Data

  • Location-Based Services data for January and February 2016 are now available for Travel Projects. This data source is now available for all months from January 2016 through March 2017.
  • Navigation-GPS data for May 2017 are now available for Travel and Premium Site Metrics. There is no change to the Standard Site Metrics which remain with September 2016 only.

Please reach out to your StreetLight Data representative with any questions about this update, or subscribe to the StreetLight Data blog to stay up-to-speed on the latest news.

As always, we are interested in hearing any questions or feedback you may have, and we hope you enjoy using StreetLight InSight!
